Julian Castro

Julian Castro has always been a hard working- man. Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas and quickly became somewhat of a local hero. Although Castro was born in Texas, his ethnicity and family is considered to be Mexican-American. Julian Castro’s mother had a large impact on his political life. She was a Chicana political activist who helped establish the political party, La Raza Unida. She was considered to be a large community activist in San Antonio. Castro’s identical twin brother, Joaquin, is also in politics and is actually a current United States Representative. Julian and Joaquin have both said that their mother was one of the biggest reasons as to why they were both in public service. Castro attended the renowned University of Stanford and graduated with honors but not before graduating high school a year early due to exceeding academics. After graduating Stanford, Castro then went on to study law at the University of Harvard in Boston.

Upon returning to San Antonio from law school, Castro ran for a chair on the city council and won; becoming the city’s youngest councilman in history. He served on the city’s council for four years until deciding to run for mayor, but lost at his first attempt. Castro decided to run for mayor once again in 2009 and won. He became the fifth Hispanic mayor in San Antonio’s history and was known for his democratic views and his arguments in support of LGBT rights. While being the mayor, Castro had a deep impact on the city’s progress and was respected by many people in the community. Castro established something called, “CafĂ© College” in 2010 which offers guidance to students in the San Antonio area that are interested in attending college. In 2011, Castro was reelected as mayor and won with a high 82.9% of the votes. The results go to show that he was a highly liked mayor. Overall, Castro served three terms from 2009 through 2014. In 2014, he was announced by the White House as a nominee to become the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development by President Barak Obama and ended up winning. Julian Castro has plenty of political experience, and has clearly outdone himself compared to many other political candidates. He is clearly an extremely determined worker that only wants to see his community, and country succeed. Castro focuses on attracting well-paying jobs as well as education. He was even ranked on Time Magazines top “40 under 40” in American Politics. I believe that he would be an exceptional candidate for the 2016 Presidential run.

  2. I think that you did a good job showing what Castro's resume is. It was also interesting to hear that he was raised in a Mexican-American household although he was born in Texas. I wonder if this will pose any threat or assistance in his potential bid for presidency.

  3. You mentioned how he takes a quality over quantity approach to his social media use. In what other ways does he plan on spreading his message and values to potential voters?
